The New European Bauhaus:

How can the wood sector engage, contribute and co-create?

Circular bio-based materials and solutions for a sustainable, affordable and beautiful transformation of the built environment

speaker-Ursula-von-der-Leyen

We know that the construction sector can even be turned from a carbon source into a sink, if organic building materials like wood and smart technologies like AI are applied.

Ursula von der Leyen

President of the European Commission
State of the Union address, 9 Sep 2021
John Schellnhuber

Reforesting the planet, retimbering the cities: timber construction is a true silver bullet for climate change. To reverse global warming, we must build up a second forest carbon sink in the built environment that stores carbon for many decades"

John Schellnhuber

I like building with wood, because it is a strong and versatile, yet very challenging material. All materials should be used for their best function and purpose, without creating any unnecessary waste.

The European Commission's New European Bauhaus is a creative, interdisciplinary movement to transform the built environment into a circular, inclusive model that can counteract the escalating climate crisis. The European wood-based sector has launched Wood4Bauhaus, the Wood Sector Alliance for the New European Bauhaus, as an open platform to reach out to the construction industry and all involved stakeholders.

Wood, an extremely versatile natural material being part of a multitude of products, is a circular material par excellence. Long-life products using wood can store carbon for decades or even centuries in buildings and living spaces, and can be reused, remanufactured and recycled to further prolong the storage time. The Alliance raises awareness for and puts a spotlight on the versatility of innovative wood products and building systems to facilitate dedicated co-creation partnerships with the construction sector, architects and the wider NEB community.

The W4B Alliance is supported through the Horizon projects WoodCircus, Basajaun, EcoReFibre and InnoRenew CoE funded by the European Commission.
